Maryam Nawaz has been sworn in as the first female Chief Minister of Punjab, marking a historic moment in the province’s political landscape. The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Governor’s House in Lahore, with Punjab Governor Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman administering the oath to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Present at the ceremony were prominent figures including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, PML-N President Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, members of the Punjab Assembly, and a large gathering of party leaders and workers.
Earlier in the day, during the provincial assembly session in Lahore, Maryam Nawaz, representing the Pakistan Muslim League-N, was elected as Punjab’s first woman Chief Minister. She secured an impressive two hundred and twenty votes, as announced by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
Despite opposition from the Sunni Ittehad Council, who had fielded Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan as their candidate and subsequently boycotted the electoral process, Maryam Nawaz emerged victorious.
In her address to the assembly following her election, Maryam Nawaz pledged to prioritize measures aimed at providing relief to the common people. She emphasized her commitment to serving the entire province, irrespective of political affiliations, and assured that her doors would always remain open to members of the opposition.
Expressing gratitude to the party leadership, including Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, as well as allied parties for their confidence in her, Maryam Nawaz emphasized her vision of transforming Punjab into a thriving business hub. She emphasized her lack of personal vendettas against political opponents and reiterated her focus on fostering prosperity and development in the province.
