In the upcoming general elections of 2024, a total of 882 women candidates are contesting from across the country. According to the Election Commission’s data, this marks a significant participation of women in general assembly seats. Of these candidates, 312 are competing for National Assembly general seats, and 570 are vying for provincial assembly seats.
Notably, Punjab has the highest with 305 women candidates, while Balochistan has the lowest with 40 women aspiring to enter the assembly. Out of the total National Assembly seats, 93 women are contesting on political party tickets, and 219 are running independently. Similarly, for the provincial assemblies, 570 women candidates are participating, with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having 69 women, 41 on party tickets, and 28 as independents.
In Punjab, out of 305 women candidates, 62 are on party tickets, and 243 are running independently. Sindh has 156 women candidates, with 61 affiliated with political parties and 95 running independently. Balochistan has 40 women candidates, including 18 on party tickets and 22 as independent candidates.
Now, it remains to be seen how many of these 882 women emerge successful and represent half of the population in the assemblies.
