Last year, 24 journalists were killed worldwide and this year a record 293 journalists were imprisoned.
International organization for journalists “Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ)” released an annual report that says the growing number of imprisoned journalists is a sign of intolerance against independent reporting.
The organisation has condemned the blocking of journalists across the world from discharging their responsibilities.
According to CPJ in current year, 50 journalists were imprisoned in China, 26 in Burma, 25 in Egypt, 23 in Vietnam, 19 in Belarus.
Besides that journalists were also sentenced to prison in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, Russia, Ethiopia and Eritrea.
A similar report from the year 2020 mentioned that a total of 280 journalists were jailed last year.
