Tokyo, Japan – The Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) invites journalists from Asia and the Pacific to submit articles to the Developing Asia Journalism Awards (DAJA) 2025. The Awards are an initiative to promote works of journalism that accurately report on regional efforts advancing sustainable development.

DAJA 2025 calls for the submission of articles addressing one of the following issues:

Challenges and opportunities regional economies face in attaining high-income status (in connection with the so-called “middle-income trap”)
Digital transformation, including artificial intelligence
Climate adaptation and the conservation of the environment and natural resources for resilience
Sustainable urban development that contributes to sustainability and inclusion

The articles must address these issues in the context of developing and emerging economies in Asia and the Pacific.

Submissions are particularly encouraged on stories that shed light on the situations facing youth, women, or disadvantaged or marginalized groups or communities. DAJA 2025 also welcomes active participation from journalists from Central and West Asia and the Pacific.

To support the next generation of quality journalism in the region, this year’s DAJA will allocate one award to a journalist under the age of 30.

Authors of the selected winning articles will be invited to a virtual awards ceremony and receive a $2,000 cash prize.

Submissions should be made no later than 6 June 2025, 17:00 Japan Standard Time.

Submission Criteria

Published by a recognized media outlet (no self-published work, e.g., personal blogs) or media institution (e.g., graduate school website).
English-language submissions only
Co-byline or multiple producers are allowed, but only one prize will be awarded per winning entry.
Written article published between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025.
Selection Committee:

Bambang Brodjonegoro, Dean and CEO, ADBI; Former Minister of Finance, Minister of National Development Planning, and Minister of Research and Technology, Indonesia
Vijay Joshi, CEO and Editor-in-Chief, Press Trust of India
Robin Harding, Asia Editor, Financial Times

Great initiative! I’m particularly interested in the theme about digital transformation, especially with AI. It’s crucial for our region to stay ahead in this rapidly changing landscape.
