A new study specifically for women by ‘European Journal of Endocrinology’ revealed that women suffering from PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), which is a hormonal condition, are 50 per cent more likely to contract COVID-19.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS is a common hormonal disorder among women of reproductive age. In this condition, women develop cysts in their ovaries, which may even lead to infertility issues. The symptoms of PCOS include weight gain, hair loss, irregular period, acne and others.

The number of women suffering from this disorder has increased dramatically across the globe in the recent years.

Now the question that arises here is that why and what increases the rate of contracting Covid-19 in this condition? The answer to this is not vague but clear that the PCOS comes by other health issues like type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and high blood pressure, all of which have been identified as risk factors for COVID-19. These metabolic health conditions can increase the severity and risk of infection.

The researchers made it clear that their study only evaluated the risk of contracting COVID, it is still difficult to say whether or not the condition influences the level of infection. To know the level of severity and the risk of long-term complications of COVID-19, further research is needed in this area.
